The
Film Industry in Lebanon:
Its
Development and Future Prospects 1929-2000
The development of the
Lebanese film industry is tackled since its beginnings in 1929. The
achievements, problems and difficulties it witnessed are discussed in
three main parts. The pre-civil war era (1929-1975) saw the
establishment of a technologically developed film industry. During this
period two main streams existed, the pioneers’ movies with a clear
Lebanese identity, and ‘cheap’ commercial movies. The 15 years of civil
war (1975-1990) led to the destruction of the industry’s infrastructure,
but witnessed the production of movies reflecting the Lebanese social
reality. The post-civil war era, from the 1990’s up to the present,
witnessed high quality movies jointly produced with foreign countries.
The research indicated that there is urgent need for government funding
support, and for technologically developed cinema studios.
