The modern history of
Lebanon within its current borders and with its distinctive mix of
Christian and Muslim communities, besides other minorities, began in
1920, under the French mandate. The State of ‘Greater Lebanon’, since
then became a republic governed under a constitution promulgated in
1926. Lebanon achieved its independence in 1943 and became a
constitutional parliamentary democracy. The constitution was
substantially revised in 1990. Lebanon joined the League of Arab States
and the United Nations as a founding member in 1945. The events of 1975
hit the country for a period of 17 years, destroyed the infrastructure,
and left behind deeply rooted social, economic and political problems.
Before the civil war, Beirut
was the leading financial capital of the Middle East. Lebanon used to be
referred to as ‘The Switzerland of the Middle East’ and ‘Paris of the
Middle East’.
